Tara has been working as a Water Quality Technician for 3 years, and has been working in the industry for 8 years.

What does your job entail?

I am responsible for ensuring a safe public water distribution system. I make long term recommendations for the safe distribution of drinking water, and manage cross connection control programmes. I respond to public enquiries, collect and analyze water quality data, operate and maintain monitoring equipment, and I am the city resource person for drinking water.

What other duties do you perform?

I do physical labour, educate school groups and public regarding the importance of drinking water and our environment, handle environmental montitoring, and participate in several union committees.

What do you think are good traits for a person in this field to possess?

A good candidate will be flexible, think outside the box, and have the desire to learn and constantly update their skills. Computer and instrument skills are recommended, good communication skills are essential, and strong leadership qualities are desirable.

What do you like most about your job?

I love the variety and the fact that the water and waste industry is evolving, so there is constant change and improvement.

What attracted you to a career in Parks and Public Works?

I was drawn to the safe work environment, good pay, the fact that this is a stable industry and the level of training provided.

What do you like most about the industry?

I enjoy the long term job security. This is a stable industry that has growing importance due to increase demand on such a valuable (and often undervalued) resource – drinking water. I love the transfer options within the industry, and that I can apply my skills and certifications anywhere. The water and waste water industry is currently experiencing a tremendous amount of movement, due in part to retirement, which is creating a lot of opportunities for all of us.
