Nick has recently been promoted to Utilities Supervisor, and has been in the industry for 11 years.
What does your job entail?
My job duties include organizing, monitoring and supervising the city’s potable water system operations, along with sewer and storm systems. This includes water supply, distribution and waste water collection.
A typical day on the job:
My job varies day-to-day. I plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for maintenance. I respond to customer service requests, order supplies and tools, monitor the SCADA system, flush water mains, repair water services and repair water main breaks and sewer line troubles, just to name a few
What do you like about your job?
I like the variety that my job offers, working with great people, and learning new technologies that I am able to apply to my work.
What do you like about the industry?
Overall, this industry is very interesting, and allows me to learn daily. I love the ever-changing environment, and the stable salary and benefits are a bonus.
What do you think are good traits for a person in this field to possess?
In this field flexibility, good organizational skills, and ability to work well with others are a must. Excellent communication skills lend a definite advantage.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Parks and Public Works?
Anyone wanting to work in my field should be organized, enjoy working outdoors and be willing to work in all weather conditions. They should work well under pressure and be able to make decisions. I recommend taking courses related to the operation of utility systems.
What attracted you to a career in Parks and Public Works?
I wanted to learn and understand how a water system operates, and wanted to help improve water quality and deliver safe drinking water to the community.
What are your career goals?
Eventually I would like to be in management, or a superintendent of a utility.
