James works as a supervisor in Street Maintenance for the City of Victoria.

What does your job entail?

I install and maintain litter tubs, maintain and clean islands, pick up litter and clean up oil spills, check for debris, storm damage and lost and abandoned bikes, fill in for sweeper position, purchase supplies and numerous other jobs that change on a daily basis.

What other functions are you involved with?

I am a member of The Entertainment Committee and The Public Works Committee.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy working for the public and interacting with the my co-workers as a team. I am proud to work for the City of Victoria, and have developed a good rapport with the public. I like working outdoors, and coordinating work with other departments.

What do you like most about the industry?

My job offers a great and healthy work environment. I receive excellent benefits, work with fantastic people, and I love that I work steady hours, Monday – Friday, so that I can spend the weekends with my family.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Parks and Public Works?

I recommend that any new employee learn all there is to know about the different Public Works Departments. It’s helpful to enroll in any courses offered, maintain a healthy attendance record, and treat your colleagues with respect. Work hard, and show up to work with a positive attitude. Take the initiative, but don’t hesitate to ask for advice from a Lead Hand or Supervisor.

What attracted you to a career in Parks and Public Works?

I liked the idea of working for a department that I can be proud of; this industry maintains our clean, vibrant and safe city. The Monday – Friday routine was appealing to my family and I, as were the flexible hours, good family benefit package, and the many career options that are available within Parks and Public Works.

What are your career goals?

I intend to work up to a Lead Hand, then Supervisor, then Division Manager.
