Darrin has been working as a Supervisor of Roads, Drainage and Solid Waste for 4 years, and has been working in the industry for 11 years.
What does your job entail?
I supervise 4 solid waste drivers and ensure that collection routes are completed in a timely and safe manner. I supervise 7 Roads and Drainage staff and schedule various tasks within the Roads and Drainage division. These tasks include ditching, surface drainage, snow and ice control, signage, grass cutting, litter collection, asphalt repairs, street sweeping, spill clean-up and street light maintenance.
What do you like most about your job?
I like that my position covers a wide verity of tasks within the Operations Department. Every day brings on new challenges.
What do you like most about the industry?
Working in the public works industry provides opportunities to further your skill set, and advance into any positions that may interest you.
What do you think are good traits for a person in this field to possess?
A person in a supervisory position should possess good leadership skills, and be able to work well with a variety of personalities. Good public relations and oral and written communication skills are a definite asset. Anyone looking to work in this industry should be able to adapt to constantly changing environments, enjoy working in all weather conditions, perform well under pressure and during emergency situations, and work well in a team environment.
What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Parks and Public Works?
I suggest that anyone considering at a career in public works look into all areas, and apply for any jobs that may interest you. Public Works oriented post secondary education would benefit on the job knowledge.
